How Do I Choose a Women's Wig?

Choose a women's wig by deciding on four things: the hair type (human hair or synthetic), the cap construction, your cap size and the style you want. Start with how much time you want to spend styling. Then match the cap to your comfort needs and measure your head so the wig stays secure. Our guide to choosing the right wig and our first-time wig buyer's guide walk through each step. If you would rather talk it through, book a free, no-obligation consultation with one of our experts.

Human Hair vs Synthetic Wigs: Which is Better?

Human hair wigs can be cut, colored and heat-styled like your own hair. Synthetic wigs arrive pre-styled and hold their shape, so they take less daily effort. Neither is better for everyone. The right choice depends on your budget, your routine and how often you will wear the wig.

  • Human hair wigs: can be curled, straightened and colored with heat tools. They move like natural hair and often last longer with careful care, but they need more upkeep.
  • Synthetic wigs: come pre-styled and need little daily effort. Use heat only on wigs labeled heat-friendly. They often wear out sooner with daily use.

For a deeper comparison, read human hair vs synthetic: what's the difference and our pros and cons. See also how to style each type.

What Are the Main Wig Cap Types?

The cap is the foundation of the wig. It affects comfort, how natural the top looks and how the hair parts.

  • Lace front wigs have a sheer lace edge at the hairline that blends into the skin for a natural front. Read what a lace front wig is.
  • Monofilament wigs have a fine mesh top that makes the hair look like it grows from the scalp and lets you part it in different places.
  • Traditional (wefted) caps have hair sewn onto fabric wefts. They are lightweight, breathable and generally more affordable.
  • Glueless wigs are made to be worn without adhesive. See our glueless wig guide.

Compare all of them in wig cap construction and types.

How Do I Find My Wig Cap Size?

Measure around your head along the hairline, from the front of the forehead, behind the ears and across the nape, with a soft tape measure. Most wigs fit within these ranges:

  • Petite / ultra petite: about 20 to 21 inches
  • Average: about 21 to 22.5 inches
  • Large: over 22.5 inches (see also average / large)

Sizes vary slightly by brand. Use our cap size guide for step-by-step measuring, or ask a consultant if you fall between sizes.

  • Long wigs: layered waves and sleek lengths. See wavy wigs and curly human hair wigs.
  • Gray wigs: silver, salt-and-pepper and blended tones. Read about gray lace front wigs.

Wigs for Thinning Hair and Hair Loss

If your hair is thinning, a topper may be all you need. Toppers, wiglets and enhancers add coverage to the crown or part, and a full wig gives complete coverage. Start with three wigs for thinning hair and whether a topper is right for you. Facing treatment? Read how to choose a wig before chemotherapy. A consultant can help you find a comfortable cap, and the first conversation is free.

How Do I Care For a Wig?

Wash it gently, detangle it with a wig brush and let it air-dry on a stand. Always check the care label for your wig's fiber. See how to care for your wig, and stock up on wig shampoo and conditioner, brushes and combs and wig stands.

Frequently asked questions

Which wig is best for everyday wear?

A synthetic wig is usually the easiest for everyday wear because it keeps its style with little effort. A human hair wig suits you if you want to restyle it with heat tools or color it. Both work well for daily use when you match the cap and size to your head.

What is the difference between a lace front and a monofilament wig?

A lace front wig has a sheer lace edge for a natural hairline. A monofilament wig has a fine mesh top that mimics a natural scalp and allows a flexible part. Some wigs combine both. See cap construction and types.

How do I know which cap size I need?

Measure around your head at the hairline. About 20 to 21 inches is petite, 21 to 22.5 inches is average, and over 22.5 inches is large. Follow the cap size guide for exact steps.

Can I wear a wig if my hair is thinning?

Yes. A topper can cover thinning at the crown or part, and a full wig covers all of it. Choose a soft, breathable cap for comfort, and ask a consultant if you are unsure.

How long does a wig last?

It depends on the fiber, how often you wear it and how you care for it. Synthetic wigs worn daily often last a shorter time than well-kept human hair wigs. Gentle washing, brushing with the right tools and proper storage extend the life of any wig.

Do you offer free wig consultations?

Yes. Our consultants offer free, no-obligation consultations to help you choose a wig for your needs. Book a consultation.

Can I exchange or return a wig?

Unworn wigs in new condition can be exchanged within 10 business days of delivery. Sale and clearance items, wig care products and some brands (including Henry Margu, Tony of Beverly, Envy and Mane Attraction) are final sale. International orders cannot be returned. See the full terms of sale.

Is shipping free?

Yes, standard shipping is free on USA orders over $125.
